When Santa Lost his Eyesight

*This is a cute little story written by my good friend Alex Castillo adapted froma play from one of my heroes, Jerry Whittle. Enjoy!

When Santa Lost His Eyesight

Santa winking/

 By: Alex Castillo

Most people know about Santa Claus. He’s the Jolly old fellow who along with a team of flying reindeer and tireless elves, work year round so that on one night out of every year, they can bring presents to children and adults all over the world. What many people are not aware of, is that one year, Santa began noticing that his vision was not what it used to be. Of course, he did not want to admit it to himself, but driving that sleigh at night, and being up there in the sky with all of those airplanes zooming by, made him feel quite unsafe.

It was no surprise when news started being gossiped about in the North Pole that Santa had gone blind, and that he was quitting the holidays. He became depressed, and without his work, he lost his sense of purpose in life. The man was a real sad mess. On one of those special Holiday nights, everything started going downhill and Just got worse and worse. The naughty and good lists were becoming a blur, and he handed out the wrong toys to more than 1 billion people. I know what you might be thinking at this moment, If Santa had gone blind, you would have surely heard about it. I’m not saying this is all true, but was there one year in which you received absolutely the most unlikely gift ever? Well, if the answer is yes, then this story might make a little sense.

After getting home that night, Santa could do little more than lock himself up in his office at the toy factory, and no matter how hard anyone tried to cheer him up, he could do absolutely nothing for a very long time. This is the story I heard last year when I was visiting friends in Ruston, Louisiana. They say that one year after he had lost his vision; Santa came down there to receive training at their blindness center. “He could barely even see Rudolph’s nose,” they said, “He had lost about 75 pounds when he had first arrived, and wouldn’t even touch a cookie.” “he’d get real close to ya when he was talking,” they would all whisper, “Couldn’t tell north from south even if he was holding a compass: bless his heart.” And apparently the entire town knew about this phenomenon. So well-known was the story down there that a writer by the name of Jerry Whittle wrote a play about the whole ordeal, and everyone in town came to see the production.

When I asked how come Santa didn’t choose Nebraska to come and train, after all, we have an awesome center right here, and it would seem the familiar choice with all the snow we get, howling winds, and freezing weather, the answer I received was: “well, Nebraska? With all that snow up there? He’d be recognized in a heartbeat if he stepped outside dressed in all red in his Husker gear. “They said: “Down here, he’s just another blind guy with a beard.” The more I thought about the story, about this blind and depressed Santa Claus, the more sense it made. Often when people start to lose their eyesight, they feel ashamed, and even worthless. People find themselves almost transforming from a productive and contributing member of their family, or community, to just sitting passively, watching life and everyone else pass them by.

We often confuse the inability to do, with the inability to see. And all that it would take for us to get back into our routine, or even find a more exciting and challenging one is to simply understand that with some blindness training, many doors can open up with the promise of opportunity. Training centers do not create Santa Claus’s. But they can help Santa figure out how he can do his job as a respectable blind person non-visually. As I recall, the play ended with Santa making the decision to keep the toy factories open and to stay in the Job as Santa Claus, and arriving at the North Pole to continue his yearly duties, with some new blindness skills and alternatives. It was a true happy ending. But the people in Ruston tell a different story. They say that he didn’t go back to the North Pole right away. “Oh, he had some trouble with the training,” they said. At first, he was always lifting those sleep shades. They said he would use the excuse of being overheated to lift them and peek during every class. He didn’t like travel very much, they said: “Oh, Santa, Santa, you would see him just hiding when it was time for travel class,” But what surprised me the most was when they told me: “the first time Santa stepped into the wood shop and heard those live blades running, he almost fainted.”

One would think that someone who has been working with factory machinery their whole lives would be able to handle an arm saw. As time went by, he settled into the center and became an excellent student. But, after training, he didn’t go back to the North Pole right away. He wanted to try out a new career. He went to work at this Cajun restaurant as a cook in the next town. During training, Santa had discovered that he had let Mrs. Claus do all the cooking their entire marriage, but he actually enjoyed working in the kitchen. “Could you imagine that?” they said, “Santa as a cook in a Cajun restaurant?” I suppose he just felt like he wanted some independence.

Like many people after they finish blindness training, he must have felt a bit rebellious and must have wanted to prove to anyone that he could go far beyond the common expectations for a blind person. It wasn’t until the Mrs. Threatened to come and get him that he decided to go back up north. Sometimes the path to independence isn’t obvious and clear. Sometimes, like Santa, we need to figure ourselves out for a little while. Sometimes, blindness gives us an opportunity to learn and make decisions which vary greatly from our past, and that we would have never thought possible if we had not lost our eyesight. And sometimes, we just get a stronger sense of who we are.

But, The first step toward independence, and starting your life, or getting it back is recognizing when it’s time to receive training, and then going through that training in a program that will allow you to fully realize yourself as a respectable blind person. After all, this is our life, and we live through our choices. As for Santa, You can decide to believe this story or not, but the children and grownups are still receiving presents on time and without any strange mix-ups. Polls show that he’s been doing a better job year after year. And just the other day, I read a review about some new restaurant opening up on the North Pole which specializes in southern cuisine. Note:

This Story was based on the play written by Jerry Whittle.

This Place...

I have been such a slacker on my blogging but tomorrow is my LAST day of work and I plan on catching up on my blogging.

I just want to sum up quickly my thoughts at the moment...

1. I am truly, truly going to miss all the wonderful people I work with. This is a hard day for me, walking away from a great job and even greater friends is tough. I have made some lifelong friends while working here at the PDRIB.

2. I am sincerely going to miss Ruston. There are so many wonderfully charming things about this place. I will always smile upon Ruston when I think about it...

Picture: Lucas and I in front of a beautiful southern yard in Ruston.

Photo: Lucas and I in front of our cute little house, with our tandem bike.

3. I know I can speak for my hubs too when I say we are going to dearly, dearly miss our sweet friends and family here in Louisiana. We both have some of the best friends in the world and for that we will always be thankful, and will be visiting for certain!

4. It's now been almost 3 weeks since I've seen my GQ, in just a few days I will get to be with him again. This puts a big smile on my cause, well, I miss him a WHOLE lot.

5. I have to say a Special Thank You to my current roomie. My co-worker and good friend Laura has let me live with her for the past month or so and I have LOVED having a roomie again. We've had so much fun and have done some serious shopping, decorating, crafting and working out. I will always love the time we got to spend together...

Oh yes, and thank you to little L who let me stay at her house with her and HER mom. And I would like all to know I followed little L's rules quite well.

Rule #1: My mom canNOT kiss you goodnight before bed.
Rule #2: You canNOT sleep in my bed, ever.
Rule #3: You canNOT steal or eat too much food.

I will really miss this place and the TERRIFIC people here!

With Love,

Deja

'Eat Fresh' in your Sneakers....

Can I tell you how much I love that I get to see my sweetheart every day! One of my favorite things is that we get to have lunch together, this sounds lame I realize, but when you've been apart as long as we have, time together is awesome.

Ok, so I love my GQ, super hot, super smart (4.0 this quarter), super sweet and super hot, wait I alrady said that didn't I?!? Anyway, in saying that, one thing that drives me crazy about my hot, smart, sweet, funny, chaaaaaaarming boyfriend is that he has NOOOOO originality when it comes to eating.
We eat the same place EVERY day...

Subway's delicious and all but serioulsy EVERY day?
I think he would do this for a living if it got him discounts on his subs...
He gets the same sub everyday too, doesn't even mix that up!

And did I mention it can't be just any of the four Subways we have in town, it's his "Favorite Subway" we have to go to every day. I think it's because the Sub-making chicks flirt with him all the time, I can't blame em really! :)

But I'm pretty sure our kids will be sleeping in something like this someday...

But hey, if he looks like this guy at 80...

I could learn to deal with it!

Mexican Nuggets on my Sneakers....

I am lucky enough to have such awesome people in my life!
When I lived in Ruston before, I met some pretty spectacular people. One of the people I met was this guy...
We didn't become instant friends but life dealt us both some pretty tough blows and that is when Bruce and I became life-long friends.
Speaking of tough blows, I decided to play football with a bunch of blind people one day...
and that is when I met Bruce's youngest son Matthew! I tackled the crap out of him a few times and we too became intsant friends.

Bruce and Matthew and their family have become a part of my every-expanding family. Bruce's boys are like my brothers and Bruce has been a best friend and confidaunt to me and I will always love him for that.
This week, Grady, second oldest in the fam, graduated himself from high school...
This is him in the red cap and gown in case you weren't sure...
Grady's pretty awesome, like the rest of his family, and I'm really proud of him, his Senior year he completely changed his life around and even graduated with academic honors.
I'm super proud!
After graduation we had a nice dinner at a Mexican restraunt here in town, since that's like all this family ever eats is Mexican! :|
So I got me a lovely mexican dish of Chicken Nuggets...
It was a fun night for all! Oh, and this guy came with me too... (we clearly don't know where the camera is, hello!)
Happy Graduation Grady!

The Sneakerlicious Good Life

Life is good in Louisiana.

I am enjoying being around my "second family" here, around people who have really shaped my life and continue to leave lasting impacts on me! I'm lucky!

I love my little house. It's quite cute and in a little country neigborhood...very different from my apartment in the city...but nice (real pics soon).

I love the food! I mean LOVE the food here in Louisiana! I have missed it so very much. I am eating my fair share of veggies, all be it they are deep fried, of course everything here is deep fried!

The weather is nice here. No rain. Just massive amounts of humidity, or as a friend of mine told me, his old school teacher called it humility...seems fitting! :)

My new job has been good, although I have a super lot to learn! But I really like the people I work with and that makes me excessively happy.

As you all know...or may not know...I'm petrified of talking on the phone. It's a deep-seeded phobia, so please don't take it personally. Plus I got this new phone and it's beyond me as to how you use it. To the person who texted and said I've been sending blank text messages all day...I apologize! Because I'm awful at updating people via phone, this is why I will to try and keep up my blog.

Life is good in Louisiana.

I'm happy and well and it's pretty great getting to go on some REAL dates and spend some time with THIS guy...

What a HOTTIE! ;)

Life is good in Louisiana!

P.S. I'm dying to get a tadem bike to ride around town, cause I miss riding a bike more than anything! So here are a couple of options...

or this dual purpose beauty...I could stay on my bike ALL day...
Just some ideas.

Please Take Your Sneakers Off Before Entering...Thank You!

MANY, and I mean MANY people have been begging me to show them pictures of my adorable house. I mean thousands of emails a day, pleading for a tiny peek at how incredibly adorable it is and how amazing of a decorator I am. So wait no longer thousands of fans...today is the day you've been waiting for.

Decorating takes a lot of thought....I mean A LOT. There are so, so many patterns and colors and styles to choose from, so at one point I thought about this for the Master bed...

this way, I wouldn't have to choose a pattern, I could pick them ALL! But then I though, nah, a little too much maybe.

I then thought, hanging dead animals on walls seems to be a big thing here in the south, so maybe I could add something to fit in a little better...

A taxidermy deer rising out of the top of a Titanic themed fish tank, after all I loved Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio is so hot!

But then, that just didn't seem me enough!
You all know how much I adore pink, I could do the entire place in pink, like a Barbie house but better.
Pink washer and dryer...

Pink living room...

Pinkalicious kitchen...

Pink potty room... with a chandelier none-the-less...

I could even add some purple for variety...

But then I felt like I'd never ever want to take Pepto Bismuth again and I love that stuff, so never mind (do you know if they seel it in Bulk at Costco?)

When thinking about the living room, I've always dreamed of a huge, fluffy couch that I could really sink into, so I found this one...

but turns out it is bigger than my house, Internet pics are so deceiving!

So I decided to take a break from the living room and begin looking for the perfect bed. I mean this is the most important piece of furniture in my mind.

You know how they say never go shopping when you're hungry, well listen to 'them' you seriously want to buy everything when you do this, like this inflatable toast bed...

or this deliciously comfy sandwich bed...

But after grabbing a quick bite to eat I thought I might like something a little more retro...

SWEET it's like from outter space!

As I was cleaning out my room to find a spot for this space-ish (haha, get it space-ish...) bed, I found like a gazillion stuffed animals I had collected. So I got this great idea...

"My house is the one with all the freaky stuffed animals hanging from it!"
So I then moved on to the kitchen. If it was up to me, I wouldn't even have a kitchen, what a waste of space if you ask me! So since the house already came with a kitchen, and a super small bedroom closet, I improvised...

It's like refrigerators were meant to store shoes, works perfectly, especially on a hot Louisiana summer day!

And last, but not least, my throne. For reasons I'd rather not discuss publicly, I spend a lot of time on the pot, so I wanted something fit for a queen such as myself...

This diamond encrusted toilet was perfect, except one little problem, diamonds can cause small laceratation on your bootay when you sit on them, who knew!?!

So I decided on a more traditional toilet...

added a little Dallas Cowboys decal inside the crap hole thingy, where it belongs, and it's my number one place for relief and relaxation!

New House. New Life. Life is good!

(Disclaimer: This may or may not be how I really decorated my house).

My Cajun Sneakers

I have made a move in my life, back to Louisiana!

I have taken a job as the Program's Manager (where I manage programs *grin*) for the Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness at Louisiana Tech University.

I'm very much a city girl through and through but found a great job and had to 'getter done' as they say! So here I am traipsing around semi-rural Louisiana in 3 inch heels...go figure!

I decided to start back up writing as I am no longer in Utah and am a huge slacker on talking on the phone to people. Plus, I like to talk about myself so this works! :)

Life is good...I don't mind a little Crawfish juice on my Coach purse!

Gray Matters

Dear Friend,

I ask that each of you please pray for everyone in Louisiana! I have dear friends who live in and around New Orleans and I'm worried about each of them. I lived in Northern Louisiana (Ruston) so, besides some bad weather, my area won't be affected so dramatically. But I know that many of my friends in Ruston are taking in evacuees and the town has suddenly increased dramatically in its population the last two days. One friend said there is not a single hotel room available in Ruston and people are now opening their hearts and homes to the evacuees. New Orleans is a great city, full or culture and beauty and I hope you will join me in praying for everyone in the wake of Gustav.

Love,

Deja Marie
Here is a great memory from New Orleans...Mardi Gras 2008!

Red Hot and Fierce!

WARNING! More football analogies than you ever imagined possible ahead...

I'm a very independent-kind-a-girl, some have called me FIERCELY independent (I'm not so sure I'm really FIERCE, refer to above image).

I recently signed on my new downtown apartment, which I love (pics coming soon!) I live by myself and like it that way, because I'M INDEPENDENT! I would rather take the bus than get a ride from someone because I have to prove that I'M INDEPENDENT! I will cut my hand off if that is what it takes to fix something on my own, because I'M INDEPENDENT!

You get the picture...

The truth is I'm willing and ready to TACKLE anything on my own. I wasn't always this way, I'd often go RUNNING BACK to my quiet corner when someone didn't like the way I did something. I let my self esteem get TACKLED on the 4TH DOWN too many times. I PLAYED for the TEAM but was afraid to stand out. When a chance came for me to take my shot at the winning pass, I FUMBLED! Not because I couldn't do it, but because I stood there and thought it was better to get SACKED than attempt a pass that may fail...

I thought this Deja, who spent too much time just holding the ball and not playing was gone, FIERCELY INDEPENDENT Deja was now playing, RIGHT? But, I may have been wrong...

I now stand with the BALL in my hands, an open RECEIVER down field, the perfect PASS a possibility... but the fear of failure looms!

When will I learn to just PASS?

Black Caps and Pink Pumps

Accomplishment: That which completes, perfects, or equips thoroughly; acquirement; attainment; that which constitutes excellence of mind.

For a day that was meant to be filled with an overwhelming sense of
accomplishment
, a Master's Degree in hand, a 3.94 to my name and a highly sought after job waiting for me in Utah, I stood there at a loss...

a loss for words or feelings to describe this journey. My moment of great
accomplishment
made me proud (for sure) but I stood their realizing this degree I held with trembling hands was nothing compared to the young lady who was holding it.

I had become this Deja I always wanted to be and now I had to walk away from the place, the pace and the people...

Through smile covered tears I pressed on that 14th day of August with a cap on my head and a pounding in my chest. It was my day but not really, it was for everyone there who pushed me, loved or hated me, laughed or cried with me, stuck with me and sometimes even carried me.

It was OUR big day...

Across the Spectrum...

My little break between quarters was quite adventure filled; hitting 10 states and 2 countries. I started it off with a cruise to Mexico (as you've all read about) and then I headed back to Salt Lake to visit my family for a bit....

I got to see several friends and family...

...met up with Batman (a.k.a. my fun nephew Iszacc)

...and got to see some friends' adorable kids (this is Madi, my friend Torrie's little girl)...

I had a great time with everyone! We went wedding dress shopping for my lil sis and made some other wedding plans, I at out a lot at some of my old time favorites, I spent time playing with Iszacc and I got to just spend some quiet time with all those I love (sorry I didn't get to see everyone!)

Then it was back to Louisiana, but only for a day, and I was off to fabulous NYC and New Jersey for my school program. We had a great time in the city, took the Subway, saw the Empire State Building and saw a great Broadway show...

I crammed a lot into my short break but had a great time doing it. Now it's back to work! I still have a lot of work before my August 14th graduation date...wahoo!

A Little Pink in the Middle...

My 25th birthday turned out to be one of my best. To say that the time between 24 and 25 was rough would be an understatement. But this birthday helped me discover all that I have to be thankful for. Thank you to all my family and friends who left sweet messages, sent cards and gifts and worked so hard to make my day so special.

I spent my actually birthday driving to Baton Rouge for some training for school...

Once in Baton Rouge my friends and professors in the Masters program ate a delicious place called Chimes where I had some killer ribs and cheesecake...yum!

After a busy few days in Baton Rouge I got home and Lucas planned a BBQ with a few friends where we ate the biggest steaks I've ever seen, ate this devine german chocolate cake and played some "Fact or Crap?" (a great game!) I had the best birthday ever...
